Small Aquarium &
Bowl Maintenance
Usually small aquariums
(2-5 gallons) and bowls (1 gallon or less) are used as homes for small goldfish,
or betta's. We wouldn't recommend putting any other type of fish in a bowl or
small aquarium. Small aquariums and bowls require special attention when
maintaining them, and because they have such a small amount water, you will
usually empty more water than you would in a larger aquarium. Below recommended
maintenance schedules for maintaining your small aquarium or bowl.
Small Aquarium Maintenance Schedule
Daily
- Feed fish according to directions on fish
food package (remove any uneaten food).
- Check and make sure all filters (if equipped),
air pumps and air stones are working properly.
- Check water temperature. If it is too warm,
you may want to add cold water.
Weekly
- Gently wipe inside tank glass to remove any
algae build up.
- Add treated water to compensate for any
evaporation loss.
Monthly (more frequently if necessary)
- Use gravel vacuum to clean gravel (use
proper size), vacuum
visible waste, and uneaten food, only empty 50-60% of the water in the
aquarium, (Also it may be necessary to temporarily remove fish from
aquarium, and put them in a bowl or container with the aquarium water or
treated water that is about the same temperature. Be careful when doing
this!).
- Clean your filter (if equipped) thoroughly (remove from
tank and clean all parts).
- Remove and replace any filter cartridges and
media, according to directions that came with filter (this may not apply to
all aquariums).
- Replace any air stones.
Schedule may vary due to
type of fish or other circumstances.

Note: Please keep in mind that soap and
other household clears used to clean an aquarium can kill your fish. Do not
use these products to clean any aquarium, or fish bowl, and use caution when
using these products around it.
Aquarium Maintenance
Maintaining your tank can become a dreaded task, but by using one of our

of times that your aquarium will have to be cleaned. Take a look at the
maintenance schedules below. Ours
applies if you are using our filter configurations and recommended filters. You
will also find a standard schedule, which applies no matter what type of filter,
assuming you just have proper equipment. For details about our maintenance

vacuum the gravel because it becomes very dirty over time. Your fish will be
happy and healthy and so will you.
